Armenian Lawn

In partnership with the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Trinity, Pinegrove Memorial Park proudly offers a dedicated section within our Tranquillity Gardens to honour the faith, traditions, and heritage of the Armenian community.

About the Armenian Apostolic Church

The Armenian Apostolic Church traces its origins to the 1st century through the preaching of the apostles Bartholomew and Thaddeus. Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD after St. Gregory the Illuminator converted King Tiridates III.

In Australia, the Armenian Apostolic Church of Holy Trinity was established in 1993 by the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Australia to serve the Armenian community in the Western Suburbs. Services are steeped in ancient rituals and traditions, meaningful liturgy, sacraments, and celebrations that foster a deep spiritual connection.

Faith & Traditions

Worship blends traditional and contemporary elements, expressing the Nicene Creed (a foundational statement of Christian faith that outlines core beliefs about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit) and emphasising Holy Tradition, the Sacraments, and the Divine Liturgy (Badarak – the Holy Eucharist).

Special Feast Days

  • Easter
  • Christmas
  • Pentecost
  • Assumption of the Virgin Mary

One unique celebration is Vartavar (Vardavar), the Feast of the Transfiguration, held 98 days after Easter.  The celebration involves drenching others with water as a symbol of love and happiness, and historical traditions included offering roses to the goddess  Astghik, which is where the name "Vartavar" comes from.

Funeral Practices

The Armenian Church funeral rite consists of three stages:
